1860Cares: Turning Everyday Waste into Everyday Good
At 1860 Coffee + Food, we love a good burger, a solid cup of coffee, and a full house. But behind every great dine-in moment is a not-so-glamorous reality:
Waste. And lots of it.
On average, the pioneer 1860 Coffee + Food branch alone goes through around 3,000 plastic cups every single month. From a business standpoint, that's normal. Efficient, even.
From an environmental standpoint? That's terrifying.
The Plastic Problem We Can't Ignore
Here's the hard truth: One plastic cup takes at least 200 years to degrade. And even then, it never truly disappears. Plastic is now everywhereโin our seas, mountains, our neighborhoods, even in the food we eat (in a recent study, experts have detected microplastics in blood samples). Some even believe this could be one of the reasons why our generation faces more illnesses and shorter lifespans.
A reason to do nothing? Never.
So We Put On Our Superhero Cape
This is where 1860Cares comes in. Instead of letting our waste contribute to the problem, we decided to make the most out of it for the environment and the community.
Through our partnership with Campo Vida Agricultural Learning Center, we collect, wash, sanitize, and donate:
- All used plastic cups from dine-in orders
- Empty plastic syrup and sauce bottles
- Spent coffee grounds from our daily extractions
How Our "Waste" Gets a Second Life
Thanks to Campo Vidaโs dedication and creativity:
- Used plastic cups are repurposed as containers for hydroponic systems and plugs for starting seedlings.
- Empty syrup & sauce bottles are repurposed to store organic fertilizers and as components for self-irrigating planters.
- Spent coffee grounds are incorporated into the soil as a natural fertilizer.
What once held coffee, sauces, and drinks now helps grow food. From cafรฉ waste to farm toolsโฆ now that's a glow-up!
