Cherry Blossoms in Zamboanga?
1860Cares Helps Nurture Madre de Cacao Seedlings at Campo Vida
Cherry blossoms in Zamboanga? Not quite. But something just as beautiful is blooming here.
The cup that once carried your favorite coffee at 1860 now carries something completely different: a young Madre de Cacao seedling preparing to grow here in Zamboanga.
From Everyday Cups to New Beginnings
At 1860 Coffee + Food, we believe that a good story does not have to end after the last sip.
Through our partnership with Campo Vida Agricultural Learning Center, our used cups have found a new purpose, becoming containers for Madre de Cacao seedlings as they begin their journey of growth.
What once held your favorite drink now helps hold the beginning of a tree.
Meet Madre de Cacao: A Tree That Gives Back
A small seedling may not look like much yet, but some trees carry a bigger purpose even before they fully grow.
Known scientifically as Gliricidia sepium, Madre de Cacao is a tree valued by many farming communities for its many uses. It is often planted as a living fence, creating natural boundaries while becoming a useful part of agricultural landscapes.
But what makes this tree even more special is what happens beneath the soil.
As a leguminous tree, Madre de Cacao has the ability to help enrich the soil through nitrogen fixation: a natural process that supports healthier growing environments for plants around it.
And when it reaches maturity, it offers another beautiful sight: clusters of delicate pink flowers that brighten its surroundings.
This is a good reminder that something that started small can eventually grow into something that gives back. Just like the cups that hold these seedlings, Madre de Cacao begins with a simple purpose, and that is to nurture growth.
When Waste Becomes Part of Something Bigger
This is the heart of 1860Cares.
- โ A guest enjoys their favorite drink.
- โป๏ธ A cup receives a second purpose.
- ๐ฑ A seedling gets the chance to grow.
- ๐ค A local cafe in Zamboanga and an advocate for sustainable farming work together to create meaningful change.
These moments may seem small, but together they become part of a bigger story. One where everyday choices can support sustainability, community, and care for the environment.
Growing Together with Campo Vida
We are grateful to Campo Vida for showing us that sustainability is not just about reducing waste. It is also about discovering new possibilities.
Their creativity and dedication remind us that even ordinary things can become part of something extraordinary.
Because every cup enjoyed at 1860 has a story, and sometimes, that story continues far beyond our humble cafe walls.
Through 1860Cares, we hope to continue creating meaningful impact in the community we proudly call home here in Zamboanga City.
